There are specific documents that are essential for you to provide when you apply for a student visa like: 

Valid Passport: A valid Passport is essential to apply for a Study Permit. According to the Canadian High Commission, it is important that you have a passport whose validity covers the intended period of stay in Canada. 

Letter of Acceptance from a designated institution: An acceptance letter from the intuition or university you are planning to study at, is required. The letter must be from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Colleges under DLI host international students under the authorization of the Canadian government.

Proof of funds: For acquiring a  Canadian study permit, the proof of validation of the funds you possess is mandatory.. It is essential to prove that you would have enough funds to pay for the tuition fees as well as take care of living expenses. Other than this, the student must also have enough funds in his/her account for a return airfare to his/her country of origin.

Know the difference between a study permit and a study visa

If your intention is to study in Canada, you would need a Canadian Study Permit. The study permit is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) allows a foreign national to study in Canada for a limited time. On the other hand, a Canadian student visa is essentially a temporary resident visa that enables you to reside in the country for a period exceeding 6 months and study. A student visa is enough if the course you have taken up is to is within a span of 6 months; you may not require a study permit, which is in fact a longer procedure. 

To acquire the study permit the important documents and proof of funds mentioned above are very important to keep in mind.  If you decide to change the course from mathematics to physics or from one institution to the other, you will have to renew the study visa and not have to apply for a new student permit. Instead, students are required to update the IRCC upon changing institutions or courses. It must be noted that a study permit expires 90 days after graduation. It becomes very essential for international graduates to update the IRCC of their current status within 90 days of graduation. 

There are exceptional cases where people do not need a study permit in Canada like:

Family or staff of foreign representatives

 If you’re a family or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada that has been accredited by Global Affairs Canada (GAC). You will not need a study permit. Your embassy can contact GAC if the need arises.

Members of foreign armed forces

If you’re on official duty in Canada as a member of a foreign armed force on official duties, you don’t need a study permit. If your family members, including minor children, want to study in Canada, they may need one.

Minor children in Canada

Minor children don’t need a study permit if they are they’re in kindergarten or are refugees or refugee claimants or they’re in pre-school, primary, or secondary school, and they’re already in Canada with a parent who has a work or study permit
